Lakeland is a city in Polk County in the US state of Florida with 106,420 inhabitants (as of 2016).

geography

Lakeland borders Plant City ( Hillsborough County ) to the west . The city is about 15 km north of Bartow and about 40 km east of Tampa . It is the largest city in the Lakeland – Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area , which corresponds to Polk County.

history

Lakeland was first connected to the railroad network by the South Florida Railroad in 1884.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 97,422 inhabitants were distributed over 48,218 households. The population density was 820.7 inh / km². 70.8% of the population identified themselves as white, 20.9% as African-American , 0.3% as Native American and 1.8% as Asian Americans . 3.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.7% to several ethnic groups. 12.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 34.7% of all households lived in 26.7% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 59.7% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.29 people and the average family size was 2.90 people.

24.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 23.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 26.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 46.9% of the population were male and 53.1% were female.

The median annual income was $ 40,650, with 15.8% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 91.04% of the population, 6.44% spoke Spanish and 2.52% had another mother tongue.

The city is crossed by Interstate 4 , US Highways 92 ( SR 600 ) and 98, and Florida State Roads 33 , 35 , 37 , 539 , 546 , 563 , 570  ( Polk Parkway , toll) and 572 .

The Lakeland station is a station of trains Silver Star and Silver Meteor train company Amtrak on the line from Miami to New York City . In 2011 the construction of a high-speed line from Tampa via Lakeland and Orlando to Miami should have started. The route should be driven along the existing trunk road network at a planned speed of 270 to 300 km / h according to the principle of traffic route bundling . The plans were put on hold by Governor Rick Scott in March 2011.

Lakeland has its own airport, Lakeland Linder Regional Airport . The nearest international airport is Tampa International Airport (around 60 km west).

The crime rate was 406 points in 2010 (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were twelve murders, 20 rapes, 140 robberies, 287 personal injuries, 1104 break-ins, 3754 thefts, 241 car thefts and six arson attacks.
