Plant City is a city in Hillsborough County in the US state of Florida with 34,721 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
The city is located in the east of the county, borders Lakeland ( Polk County ) to the east and is about 25 km east of Tampa .
history
Plant City was named after the railroad magnate Henry Bradley Plant . The city was first connected to the railroad network ( Sanford - Tampa railroad ) in 1884 by the South Florida Railroad , owned by Plant . In 1886 the Tropical Florida Railroad , a subsidiary of the Florida Railroad , built another railway line from Ocala to Plant City and, in 1890, an extension to Tampa.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 34,721 inhabitants were distributed over 13,732 households. The population density was 592.5 inh / km². 69.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 15.1% as African American , 0.6% as Indians and 1.4% as Asian Americans . 10.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.5% to several ethnic groups. 28.8% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 40.5% of all households and people aged 65 and over in 23.9% of all households. 72.2% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.82 people and the average family size was 3.28 people.
31.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 16.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 33 years. 48.4% of the population were male and 51.6% were female.
The median annual income was $ 47,565, with 17.4% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 83.79% of the population, 15.58% spoke Spanish and 0.63% had another mother tongue.

The city is the Interstate 4 , from US Highway 92 and the Florida State Roads 39 , 566 , 574 and 600 crosses. The Silver Star of the railway company Amtrak happened Plant City without stopping. Plant City Airport is located in the southwest of the city .

The crime rate in 2010 was 386 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were two murders, six rapes, 40 robberies, 136 physical injuries, 299 break-ins, 1,184 thefts, 140 car thefts and eight arson attacks.
