Sanford is a city and also the county seat of Seminole County in the US state of Florida with 53,570 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Sanford has always been an agricultural center. Today the city is home to the Delta Connection flight school and the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens .

geography

The city is part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) Orlando – Kissimmee – Sanford, Florida (called Greater Orlando ), in which a good 2.1 million people live. It is located on the south bank of Lake Monroe , which forms part of the St. Johns River . Sanford is about 20 km north of Orlando .

history

The Timucua once lived on the shores of Lake Monroe , around 1760 the Seminoles replaced the previous population. In 1835 the Seminoles destroyed the port of Palatka on the St. Johns River . then a garrison was built upstream on the south bank of Lake Monroe at a trading post . It was named Camp Monroe . After an attack in 1837, the camp was reinforced and named Fort Mellon .

General Zachary Taylor had a road built from Fort Mellon to Fort Brooke (now Tampa ). In 1842 the city of Mellonville was built around Fort Mellon (by Daniel Stewart). When Florida joined the United States in 1845, Mellonville became the first county seat of Orange County , previously Mosquito County , located on the north side of Lake Monroe in Enterprise . In 1870 General Henry Shelton Sanford acquired 50.78 km² west of Mellonville and founded a town there. Sanford believed the new location had the potential to become the hub of trade with southern Florida and named it "The Gateway City to South Florida". Various groups were brought in from Swedes in 1871 as indentured servants ( temporary servants ) to build a new city with grueling work and clear the subtropical wilderness in order to be able to grow citrus trees in its place. The place was raised to a municipality with its 100 inhabitants in 1877; In 1883 Mellonville was incorporated.

In 1880 Sanford received its first rail connection to Orlando through the South Florida Railroad . This line was extended to the port of Tampa until 1884 . In 1886 the gap was closed in Sanford from Jacksonville by the Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West Railway . Also in 1886, the Orange Belt Railway built a line from Sanford to Oakland , which was extended to Saint Petersburg in 1888 . During this time a hotel was built in Sanford. After several takeovers, the Orange Belt Railway was shut down when the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad was founded in 1967.

In 1887 a fire destroyed many buildings in the city, most of which were then made of wood. Brick was used in the reconstruction. In the winter of 1894/95, an unusual cold spell destroyed the citrus harvest. This motivated farmers to also plant vegetables. Celery was first planted in 1896. As this vegetable soon became the leading variety, the city was given the nickname Celery City. In 1913, Seminole County was spun off from Orange County and Sanford was promoted to the county seat. Agriculture remained the dominant industry until the 1940s.

In 1942, the Naval Air Station Sanford was established, which served as a training location for pilots, which conducted operational training in the PV-1 Ventura , PBO Hudson , F4F / FM-1 Wildcat and the F6F Hellcat . 1943–45 there were around 360 officers and 1,500 soldiers stationed at NAS Sanford. The base was deactivated in 1946, but reactivated as early as 1950. Now Douglas A-3 and later North American A-5 operated there. In the mid-1960s the base had almost 4,000 employees.

Because of the cost of the Vietnam War , several military bases in the United States were closed in 1968, including NAS Sanford. The site was then converted into a civil airport, now known as Orlando Sanford International Airport .

With the opening of Walt Disney World in October 1971, the economic focus in the entire region shifted more towards tourism. Due to its past as a trading center, several older buildings have been preserved in Sanford. Its location on Lake Monroe and the St. Johns River made it possible to connect the city by water with the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway via Jacksonville .

Sanford has recently been filming a number of films including My Girl (1991), Passenger 57 (1992), Rosewood Burning (1997), and Monster (2003).

On February 26, 2012, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot dead in the street. This act subsequently led to the resignation of the local police chief.
