Oakland is a city in Orange County in the US state Florida with 2538 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Oakland borders directly on Winter Garden to the east and is around 25 km west of Orlando . The city lies on the south bank of Lake Apopka .

history

The city of Oakland was founded in 1887, after the progressing construction of the Orange Belt Railway from Sanford had reached the city the previous year . After several takeovers, the line was shut down when the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad was founded in 1967.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 2538 inhabitants were distributed over 958 households. The population density was 466.5 inh / km². 67.8% of the population identified themselves as whites , 20.4% as African American , 0.6% as Indians and 4.8% as Asian Americans . 3.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.0% to several ethnic groups. 10.0% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 45.9% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 20.7% of all households. 81.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.99 people and the average family size was 3.32 people.

29.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 32.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 15.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39 years. 48.2% of the population were male and 51.8% were female.

The median annual income was $ 82,308, with 9.6% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 98.47% of the population and 1.53% spoke Spanish .

Oakland is crossed by Florida's Turnpike (toll road) and Florida State Roads 50 and 438 . The nearest airport is Orlando International Airport (around 40 km east).

The crime rate in 2010 was 342 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There was one rape, one robbery, four assaults, 13 break-ins, 23 thefts and five car thefts.
