Ocoee is a city in Orange County in the US state of Florida with 35,579 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

The city borders directly on the city of Winter Garden to the west and is about 10 km west of Orlando .

history

In 1888 the Florida Midland Railway was opened, running from Lake Jesup via Clarcona and Ocoee to Kissimmee . In 1896 the company was incorporated into the Plant System . Further owners were subsequently the ACL (1902-1967), the SCL (1967-1986) and CSX (since 1986).

In connection with the presidential election in the United States in 1920 , there was an uproar against African Americans in Ocoee on November 2, 1920 . 25 African American houses, two African American churches and a Masonic lodge were burned down. At least six black people were killed, but there are also estimates of up to 50 fatalities. The African American population, numbered at 495 before the incident, disappeared.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 35,579 inhabitants were distributed over 12,802 households. The population density was 933.8 inh / km². 66.8% of the population identified themselves as whites, 17.5% as African-Americans , 0.4% as Indians and 5.5% as Asian Americans . 6.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.4% to several ethnic groups. 20.8% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 18.3% of all households lived in 45.2% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 78.3% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.99 people and the average family size was 3.33 people.

30.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 12.8% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 35 years. 48.8% of the population were male and 51.2% were female.

The median annual income was $ 61,653, with 9.7% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 84.06% of the population, 13.87% spoke Spanish and 2.07% had another mother tongue.

Attractions

The Ocoee Christian Church , Withers-Maguire House, and the Woman's Club of Ocoee are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

traffic

Florida State Roads 50 , 91 ( Florida's Turnpike , toll), 429 ( Daniel Webster Western Beltway , toll), 437 and 438 run through Ocoee . The Florida Central Railroad operates freight traffic from here to Winter Garden , Forest City , Orlando and Sorrento and Umatilla . The nearest airport is Orlando International Airport (around 30 km southeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 303 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were nine rapes, 48 ​​robberies, 102 bodily harm, 257 break-ins, 929 thefts, 69 car thefts and seven arson attacks.
