Kissimmee is a city and also the county seat of Osceola County in the US state of Florida with 59,682 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Kissimmee is about 25 km south of Orlando . The city is part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) Orlando – Kissimmee – Sanford, Florida (called Greater Orlando ), in which a good 2.1 million people live.
history
Kissimmee was founded in the mid-19th century under the name Allendale . The city was first connected to the railroad network by the South Florida Railroad in 1881. In 1883 the place was officially renamed Kissimmee . In 1888 another railway line was opened by the Florida Midland Railway , which ran from Lake Jesup via Clarcona to Kissimmee. While the South Florida Railroad was part of the Plant System from the start , the Florida Midland Railway was not incorporated into it until 1896. Further owners of both railway lines were subsequently the ACL (1902–1967), the SCL (1967–1986) and CSX (since 1986).
In the years 1894 and 1895 a long cold spell hit the region. It caused severe crop failures. In 1900 Kissimmee got electricity. The Monument of States was inaugurated in 1943 . A storm surge in 1956 caused about $ 2 million in damage to Kissimmee. After Disney Park opened in 1971, the city's largest source of income changed from agriculture to tourism.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 59,682 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 26,275 households. The population density was 1381.5 inh / km². 66.1% of the population identified themselves as whites, 12.4% as African American , 0.6% as Indians and 3.4% as Asian Americans . 13.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 4.7% to several ethnic groups. 58.9% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 40.9% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 20.8% of all households. 72.1% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.85 people and the average family size was 3.24 people.
28.9% of the population were younger than 20 years, 26.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 13.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 34 years. 48.6% of the population were male and 51.4% were female.
The median annual income was $ 38,158, with 19.6% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 55.30% of the population, 37.92% spoke Spanish and 6.78% had another mother tongue.
Attractions
The Osceola Heritage Park is home to the Silver Spurs Arena , a concert and event arena, and the Osceola County Stadium . Not far from the city is the Walt Disney World Resort .

Sports
In Kissimmee is the Osceola County Stadium , a baseball field built in 1984 with seating for 5130 spectators. The Houston Astros hold their jumping training in the stadium . The Osceola County Softball Complex , built in 1996, and the Austin-Tindall Regional Park are also located in Kissimmee .

The urban area is crossed by the Florida's Turnpike (toll) and the US Highways 17 , 92 ( SR 600 ), 192 ( SR 530 ) and 441 ( SR 500 ).
The Kissimmee station is a station of trains Silver Star and Silver Meteor train company Amtrak on the line from Miami to New York City . In 2018, Kissimmee was also connected to the SunRail line from DeBary via Orlando to Poinciana .
Kissimmee has its own airport, the Kissimmee Gateway Airport . The nearest international airport is Orlando International Airport (around 20 km northeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 349 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There was one murder, 19 rapes, 122 robberies, 457 personal injuries, 856 break-ins, 2,192 thefts, 170 car thefts and 17 arson attacks.
