DeBary is a city in Volusia County in the US state of Florida with 19,320 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

DeBary is located on the northwest bank of Lake Monroe as well as the east bank of the St. Johns River , which flows through the lake. The city borders Orange City to the north and Deltona to the east . Beyond the river bank are the State Parks Blue Spring State Park and Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park . DeBary is about 10 km south of DeLand and about 30 km north of Orlando .

history

The area received its first railway connection in 1886 when the Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West Railway (JT&KW) was extended from Jacksonville via Palatka to Sanford with Benson Junction station , now a district of DeBarys. Later, a branch from Benson Junction to Titusville was opened, which was temporarily owned by JT&KW and closed in 1970. After several sales and restructuring, the main line finally came into the possession of CSX Transportation in 1986 .

The city itself was founded on December 31, 1993 and named after Samuel Frederick de Bary, an early settler of the place.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 19,320 inhabitants were distributed over 8,886 households. The population density was 394.3 inh / km². 90.5% of the population identified themselves as whites, 4.0% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 1.9% as Asian Americans . 1.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 9.1% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 25.7% of all households and people aged 65 or over in 37.0% of all households. 70.1% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.38 people and the average family size was 2.81 people.

20.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 18.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 30.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 30.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 48 years. 48.4% of the population were male and 51.6% were female.

The median annual income was $ 54,606, with 6.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 94.43% of the population, 3.58% spoke Spanish and 1.99% spoke another language.

The DeBary Hall and Mount Taylor are in the National Register of Historic Places listed.

DeBary is crossed by Interstate 4 and on a shared route by US Highways 17 and 92 ( SR 15 and 600 ). The nearest airport is Orlando Sanford International Airport (around 10 km southeast).

DeBary is a SunRail station on the route from here via Orlando to Poinciana . At the train stations in Winter Park (south) and DeLand (north) there is a connection to the long-distance trains of the Amtrak .
