DeLand is a city and also the county seat of Volusia County in the US state of Florida with 27,031 inhabitants.

geography

DeLand borders Lake Helen to the east and is approximately 25 miles north of Orlando .

history

The city was founded on December 6, 1876 and named after Henry A. DeLand, the city's founder.

The city received its first rail connection in 1886 when the Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West Railway was extended from Jacksonville via Palatka to Sanford . After several sales and restructuring, the route finally came into the possession of CSX Transportation in 1986 .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 27,031 inhabitants were distributed over 12,610 households. The population density was 657.7 inh / km². 74.5% of the population identified themselves as white , 17.1% as African American , 0.3% as Native American and 1.9% as Asian Americans . 4.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.3% to several ethnic groups. 12.7% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 28.1% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 36.1% of all households. 57.3% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.29 people and the average family size was 2.97 people.

25.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 22.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 26.1% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39 years. 45.4% of the population were male and 54.6% were female.

The median annual income was $ 36,527, with 20.7% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 90.31% of the population, 8.01% spoke Spanish and 1.68% had another mother tongue.

education

DeLand is home to Stetson University , which was founded in 1883. The university is right next to the historic old town. In 1900 the law faculty was founded. Stetson was Florida's first law school. It was here in 1960 that the first black law student was enrolled in what had been a white university.

In addition, DeLand is one of four locations of the private Florida Technical College.

DeLand is crossed or affected by Interstate 4 , US Highways 17 ( SR 15 ) and 92 ( SR 600 ) and Florida State Roads 11 , 15A , 44 and 472 .

The DeLand station is a station of trains Silver Star and Silver Meteor train company Amtrak on the line from Miami to New York City . From 2017 at the latest, the SunRail regional trains will run from here via Orlando to Poinciana .

DeLand has its own airport, DeLand Municipal Airport . The nearest international airport is Daytona Beach International Airport (around 30 km northeast).
