Daytona Beach is a city in Volusia County in the US state of Florida with 61,005 inhabitants (as of 2010). After Deltona, it is the second largest city of the MSA Deltona – Daytona Beach – Ormond Beach .

geography

Daytona Beach is directly adjacent to the cities of Ormond Beach , Holly Hill , South Daytona and Port Orange . The city is located about 20 km northeast of DeLand and about 80 km northeast of Orlando .

history

Daytona Beach is named after its founder Matthias Day and was founded in 1876. In 1926 the cities of "Daytona", "Daytona Beach" and "Seabreeze" were merged to form "Daytona Beach".

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 61,005 inhabitants were distributed over 33,920 households. The population density was 401.3 inh / km². 57.8% of the population identified themselves as whites, 35.4% as African American , 0.4% as Native American and 2.3% as Asian Americans . 1.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.3% to several ethnic groups. 6.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 29.8% of all households lived in 19.6% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 46.5% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.05 people and the average family size was 2.79 people.

21.4% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 28.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 24.7% were 60 years or older. The mean age was 40 years. 50.0% of the population were male and 50.0% were female.

The median annual income was $ 29,533, with 29.0% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 90.37% of the population, 4.02% spoke Spanish and 5.61% had another mother tongue.

Cheerleading

Every spring, the NCA & NDA Collegiate National Championships , the most important cheerleading competition in the USA, take place in Daytona Beach.

Daytona International Speedway

Daytona is known for the Daytona International Speedway race track , which consists of an oval with three banked bends and a road racing course inside. On the former, NASCAR u. a. the Daytona 500 and the Coke Zero 400 ; The 24-hour race of Daytona is held on the latter, including the banked bends and a chicane . The Daytona 200s also drive the superbikes there. Most racing events take place from January to March.

Bike Week in Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach is known for its 37-kilometer-long beach, which can be cruised on at a slow pace by car or motorcycle . In good weather, the beach becomes a fairground. Here you will find many stalls, surfers, kite surfers, beach sailors and more. The city is best known to tourists for two major events: Spring Break , the exuberant celebration of American students during the spring break, and Bike Week , one of the largest Harley-Davidson gatherings. There is also a second large gathering of Harley riders that as a counterpart to the Munich Oktoberfest scale Biketoberfest . Finally, there is the annual Turkey Race, a meeting of classic cars and hot rods in November that attracts thousands of vehicles. In recent years, the number of visitors who come to Daytona Beach for Spring Break has decreased significantly, to the extent that no figures have been collected about them since 2002. Instead, the students switch to other cities.

Daytona Beach is crossed or touched by Interstates 4 and 95 , US Highways 1 ( SR 5 ) and 92 ( SR 600 ) and Florida State Roads 5A , 400 and 483 . Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach operates a bus service to DeLand train station , 45 km away , where there is a connection to the Amtrak rail network. The Daytona Beach International Airport is located just southwest of the city center.

The crime rate in 2010 was 579 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were three murders, 31 rapes, 229 robberies, 548 personal injuries, 1,083 break-ins, 3,089 thefts, 463 car thefts and 16 arson.
