The Interstate 4 (abbreviated I-4 ) is part of the Interstate Highway System in the United States . It runs exclusively in the state of Florida between the cities of Tampa and Daytona Beach .

This is the interstate highway with the second lowest serial number after I-2 , I-1 and I-3 are not assigned. Like all even-numbered interstates, I-4 runs in an east-west direction. Along its entire course, the route also bears the hidden name of Florida State Road 400 . Only an approximately 7 km extension in the city of Daytona Beach is signposted as SR 400.

history

Interstate 4 is one of the first interstates built in Florida. The first section opened between Plant City and Lakeland in 1959. The Howard Frankland Bridge to Tampa was opened in 1960/1961. The entire section between Lakeland and Orlando was completed in 1962.
