Haines City is a city in Polk County in the US state of Florida with 20,535 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
The city is located about 35 km northeast of Bartow and about 50 km southwest of Orlando .
history
Haines City was first connected to the railroad network by the South Florida Railroad in 1884. In 1912, the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad built another route from Haines City to Sebring .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 20,535 inhabitants were distributed over 9,076 households. The population density was 955.1 inh / km². 53.4% of the population identified themselves as whites, 27.5% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 1.4% as Asian Americans . 14.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.7% to several ethnic groups. 38.9% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 40.5% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 31.0% of all households. 75.5% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.96 people and the average family size was 3.35 people.
30.8% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 27.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 22.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 34 years. 49.4% of the population were male and 50.6% were female.
The median annual income was $ 36,261, with 25.8% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, 75.10% of the population spoke English as their mother tongue, 22.14% spoke Spanish and 2.76% had another mother tongue.

Haines City is crossed by US Highways 17 , 27 ( SR 25 ) and 92 ( SR 600 ) and Florida State Roads 17 and 544 . The Orlando International Airport is approximately 60 km northeast of the city.

The crime rate in 2010 was 327 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were five rapes, 40 robberies, 82 assaults, 239 break-ins, 560 thefts, 33 car thefts and two arson attacks.
