Winter Haven is a city in Polk County in the US state of Florida with 33,874 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

The cities of Auburndale , Lake Alfred , Haines City , Dundee and Lake Hamilton are in close proximity . Bartow is 10 km southwest and Orlando 70 km northeast of the city. After Lakeland, Winter Haven is the second largest city in the Lakeland – Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area , which corresponds to Polk County.

history

In April 1924 the subsidiary Florida, Western and Northern Railroad of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad was founded, which was to build a railway line from Coleman via Winter Haven and Sebring to West Palm Beach . The entire corridor was opened in January 1925.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 33,874 inhabitants were distributed over 17,037 households. The population density was 739.6 inh / km². 64.7% of the population identified themselves as whites , 27.7% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 2.0% as Asian Americans . 3.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.3% to several ethnic groups. 11.0% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 28.1% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 37.4% of all households. 61.6% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.32 people and the average family size was 2.93 people.

24.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 23.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 28.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 42 years. 46.3% of the population were male and 53.7% were female.

The median annual income was $ 36,895, with 22.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 90.99% of the population, 4.48% spoke Spanish and 4.53% spoke another language.

Winter Haven is on the US highways , 17 , 27 and 92 and the Florida State Roads 540 , 542 , 544 , 600 and 620 crosses or touches. The station Winter Haven is a station of trains Silver Star and Silver Meteor train company Amtrak on the line from Miami to New York City . The nearest airports are Lakeland Linder Regional Airport (30 km to the west) and Orlando International Airport (70 km to the northeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 459 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were two murders, ten rapes, 68 robberies, 164 personal injuries, 368 break-ins, 1,462 thefts, 85 car thefts and six arson attacks.
