biography

Carter celebrated first successes as a songwriter. Folk singer Judy Collins had a top 40 hit in 1973 with one of her compositions: Cook with Honey . Singer / songwriter Jackson Browne wrote the song Love Needs a Heart with her and Lowell George , which was released on Browne's album, Running on Empty , which has sold over seven million times . Carter was also briefly a member of the folk rock band Howdy Moon, which released a little-noticed LP at A&M in 1974, which also contains a version of Cook with Honey .

Carter released around half a dozen solo albums from the late 1970s, of which her debut Just a Stone's Throw Away (1977) was the only one to hit the US charts. The highest ranking was number 182. It includes a cover of the soul title Ooh Child , which was also featured on the soundtrack to the film Wut im Bauch . This recording is one of her most famous songs.

A duet with the rock singer Eddie Money brought Carter her only entry as an interpreter in the US singles hit list at the end of 1980: Let's Be Lovers Again reached number 65. Six years later, she had another small hit in the adult contemporary charts USA: Love Can Take Us All the Way , a duet with actor Jack Wagner , reached number 15.

In addition to her own career, Carter was particularly in demand as a background singer: She worked for many decades with James Taylor , with whom she was also a private friend, and accompanied him on tour. She can also be heard on albums by Linda Ronstadt , Little Feat , Lyle Lovett , Neil Diamond and Ringo Starr . At the end of 1982 Steve Winwood landed a small hit in the USA and Great Britain with the song Valerie , the lyrics of which were inspired by Carter. This song served as the basis for the worldwide hit Call on Me by Eric Prydz .

Carter struggled with drug problems for decades, but overcame them thanks in part to the help of her friend James Taylor.
