Judy Collins
Judy Collins (born May 1, 1939 in Seattle , Washington ; real name Judith Marjorie Collins ) is an American folk singer and songwriter .
biography
As a child, Judy Collins learned classical piano with Antonia Brico . At the age of 13 she made her concert debut with Mozart's Concerto for Two Pianos. A little later, however, she became interested in the music of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger . In New York's Greenwich Village she sang in clubs, where she accompanied herself on the guitar. In 1961 her first album A Maid of Constant Sorrow was released .
At first she played and sang classic folk songs and pieces by successful colleagues such as Tom Paxton , Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan . She recorded her own versions of well-known songs, such as Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man or Turn! Turn! Turn! by Pete Seeger. She also played pieces by little-known songwriters, including Leonard Cohen , whose song Suzanne she first published, and Joni Mitchell .
With her album Wildflowers (1967, with arrangements by Joshua Rifkin ) Judy Collins began to record her own songs. The album won a Grammy , and Both Sides Now (written by Joni Mitchell) made it to # 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The album Who Knows Where the Time Goes (1968) was produced by David Anderle, Stephen Stills (from Crosby, Stills & Nash ), with whom Collins was dating at the time, can be heard as guitarist. Stills dedicated the song Suite: Judy Blue Eyes to her , in which he discussed the end of their relationship. Nevertheless, Collins and Stills continued to perform together, for example on a Graham Nash TV show and sang a duet on Collins' album Paradise in 2010 . The album also included another duet with folk singer Joan Baez . In 2017, Collins and Stills went on tour together for the first time and released their joint album Everybody Knows in September .
In the 1970s, Judy Collins had hits with her own songs like My Father and Born to the Breed, as well as other songwriters' pieces, including Amazing Grace and Send in the Clowns . In 1979 she posed naked for her album Hard Times for Lovers .
In 1987 Judy Collins published her memoir under the title Trust Your Heart . She also wrote two novels but continued to perform as a musician and release albums. In 1993 she sang at the inauguration of Bill Clinton . The Clintons said they named their daughter Chelsea after the Collins song Chelsea Morning written by Joni Mitchell .
Judy Collins is a UNICEF ambassador and fights against the use of landmines. Since the suicide of her son Clark Taylor in 1992, she has also campaigned for suicide prevention. In 2015 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
