Jac Holzman , actually Jacob Holzman (born September 15, 1931 in New York City ) is an American businessman. He was best known as the founder of the record labels Elektra Records , Nonesuch Records and Cordless Recordings.

biography

In 1950 Holzman founded Elektra Records with Paul Rickholt while he was a student . He signed numerous bands and musicians for Elektra who later became world famous, including the Doors , Queen , Love , Judy Collins , Carly Simon , the Stooges , MC5 and the Butterfield Blues Band . In 1964 Holzman founded the Elektra sub-label Nonesuch Records for classical music, later world music was added.

In 1970 Elektra and Nonssuch Records were bought by the Kinney National Company, from which Warner Communications emerged a little later . Holzman stayed with his label until 1973, when he moved to other businesses, including home video, interactive cable television, compact discs, video games and investment.

He returned to the music business in 1991 when his investment firm FirstMedia acquired the jazz labels Discovery , Trend and Musicraft . In 1998 Holzman published Follow The Music: The Life And High Times Of Elektra Records In The Great Years Of American Pop Culture , written with Gavan Daws. In 2005, Holzman founded the Cordless Recordings label. In 2013 he was involved in creating the iPad app The Doors .

Holzman is the father of jazz pianist Adam Holzman , writer Jaclyn Easton, and filmmaker Marin Sander-Holzman.
