The observatory "Bruno-H.-Bürgel" Sohland / Spree is located in the south of the Bautzen district in Sohland on the Spree am Hohberg and is named after the "worker astronomer" Bruno H. Bürgel .

history

1953 Sohlander Friedrich Uhmann, Edmund Grundert and Heinz Klötzke began in the workshop of the company Schick dance during their free time a Newtonian reflector telescope building. After a favorable observation location had been found, a dome building for the instrument was erected by local craftsmen in three years of construction free of charge. The inauguration was on October 13, 1963.

Furnishing

A wide range of instruments is available at the observatory today, for example Newtonian telescopes , refractors , binoculars and a computer-controlled Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope . The observatory includes a building with a lecture hall, moon room (ballroom), library, club room and function rooms.

Planet path

Planet path starting point at the observatory

In 2000 the members of the Observatory Association designed a planetary hiking trail . He simulates the terrestrial solar system as a spatial model on a scale of approx. 1: 1.4 billion. Bilingual boards (German and Czech) describe the dimensions and properties of the celestial bodies of the solar system at 10 stations. The starting point is an interesting sculpture of the sun with its planets at the observatory. The end point with the dwarf planet Pluto is the “Prinz-Friedrich-August Baude” mountain inn near the Czech border.

Sundials

The sundials working group of the observatory calculates, builds, looks after, maintains and restores, among other things, the sundials in Sohland , Wehrsdorf and the sundial village of Taubenheim .

Archaeoastronomy

A solar observation phenomenon discovered in 2006 on various rock and stone formations in Upper Lusatia led to the establishment of the archaeoastronomy specialist group in the Observatory Association in 2008 . The archaeoastronomical research project was named "Project Gods Hand". Since 2013, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Sohland observatory, the Archaeoastronomy Section has been organizing the "International Day of Archaeoastronomy".

Some objects that are addressed as the sun shrines of Upper Lusatia

In 2018, the Königshain cuckoo stone with its calendar astronomical functions at the Sohland observatory was recreated from Oberlausitz granite with a size of approx. 2 m. It is part of the " Sun Paths " tourism project . A joint project of the community of Sohland and the association of the public and school observatory "Bruno-H.-Bürgel" Sohland / Spree eV as part of the archaeoastronomical research project Götterhand. Funded by the Leader Region “Bautzener Oberland” with funds from the European Agricultural Fund for the development of rural areas. The replica of the cuckoo stone at the observatory forms the starting point of a hiking route to various calendar astronomical stone formations in Upper Lusatia and the Czech Republic.
