The potter is a 582 meter high mountain in the Zittau Mountains northeast of the village of Oybin . He is known mainly for its geological formations, the mountain hut on the summit (Potters Cottage) and the views of the Oberlausitzer Bergland , the giant and Jizera and the city of Zittau . The potter probably owes his name to one of the numerous rock formations on the elongated summit, a rock gate, which looks like two goblets or urns.

Viewpoints

The Bohemian view on the Töpfer is a lookout point at the eastern end of the summit plateau. From the rock pulpit secured by railings, there is a view over the German-Czech border towards the Jizera , Giant and Jeschken Mountains . There are several places to the northeast, including Bogatynia in Poland and Hrádek nad Nisou in the Czech Republic. About two kilometers to the east, the road from Lückendorf to Zittau passes below the Bohemian view .

history

In 1369, Emperor Charles IV gave the mountain to the Cölestiner monks from Oybin . In a monk's script the mountain was mentioned as "Tepper".

The city of Zittau acquired the mountain in 1574. In 1831 discussions were held about erecting a so-called constitutional pillar in honor of the Saxon constitution on the mountain, but it was finally built in Zittau. A mountain meeting of 18 choral societies from Lusatia and Northern Bohemia on the Töpfer, at the time still without catering, was the decisive factor in the Olbersdorf council's request to ask the mayor of Zittau to build a “small mountain hut”. 1860 then was the first mountain hut built at the same time issued the first mountain guide.

In 1876 the building had to be expanded due to the steadily increasing flow of visitors. After a fire caused by a lightning strike in 1903, the house was reopened in its current form a year later.

The international nature trail of the Lausitzer and Zittau Mountains has been leading over the summit for several years .

Saxon speleologists from the cave research groups Dresden and Zittau explored an unusually large number of caves in this sandstone karst area. T. is also attributed to significant rock movements. They are documented in the Saxon cave cadastre.

Since 2008, the public and school observatory "Bruno-H.-Bürgel" in Sohland / Spree, Department of Archaeoastronomy, has been investigating the rock gate on the potter with regard to its calendar behavior in interaction with the sun. It was found that the opening angle of the rock gate from the west corresponds exactly to that of the sunrise for the year (from solstice to solstice) and from the east the sun sets exactly in the middle of the gate at the summer solstice .
