About this picture

Olbersdorf is a Saxon municipality in the district of Görlitz . It is the administrative seat of the administrative community Olbersdorf . Olbersdorf is located south of Zittau at the foot of the Zittau Mountains. After the uniform communities of Kottmar , Großschönau and Oderwitz , which consist of several districts, Olbersdorf is the fourth largest non-urban community in the district of Görlitz and thus the largest non-urban place in the district.

Olbersdorf is known nationwide for hosting sporting events such as the Zittau Mountain Run or the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships 2014 on Lake Olbersdorf . In 2015 the German championships in cross triathlon took place in Olbersdorf.

geography

The place, laid out as a forest hoof village, borders directly on the city of Zittau in the north and the Zittau Mountains in the south . It extends in the valley of the Goldbach , which always had water even in times of drought and was therefore “worth gold” for the owners of the numerous mills. Niederdorf is the Olbersdorfer lake , the flooded open pit lignite mine Glückauf , the 1908 Pfeilerbruchbau began and 1910 for open pit open-minded was. The lake has been used for recreational purposes since the State Garden Show in 1999 . The O-See-Challenge has been held on the north shore of the lake for many years. Although the city of Zittau is specified as the venue, the O-See-Challenge and the special ITU Cross-Triathlon World Championships 2014 will take place in the whole area in Olbersdorf.

Neighboring communities

Olbersdorf is neighboring in the north and east through the city of Zittau , in the south through Oybin , in the southwest through Jonsdorf and in the west through Bertsdorf-Hörnitz .

Local division

The place Olbersdorf is divided into the Niederdorf, the Oberdorf, the Kaltenstein, the Städtel, the Randsiedlung, the new building area (Grundbachsiedlung) and the Kohlenviebig. The community is not structured in officially defined districts and has no integrated community parts. The former district of Eichgraben was reclassified to Zittau.

history

Map of Oberreit with Nieder-Olbersdorf around 1845
Map of Oberreit with Ober-Olbersdorf around 1845

On the Kaiserfeld, when a hill was raised, a hoard with 49 edge ridge axes was found, which documents the settlement of the area on Mittelweg in the Bronze Age (now in the Görlitzer Museum).

In 1319 Olbersdorf is mentioned for the first time as "Albertsdorf" ("Village of an Albert"). The spelling "Olbersdorf" appears for the first time in 1429. In 1343 teams of the Bishop of Meissen made the area unsafe. In 1362 the Prague and in 1420 and 1424 the Hussites burned down Olbersdorf. In 1428 there was an outbuilding to the site. In 1533 the Turkish war brought new burdens and suffering to the village. The horrors of the Thirty Years' War were so persistent for Olbersdorf that the peace festival could not be celebrated until 1650. In the Turkish War (1664) , in the Northern War , in the Silesian and Napoleonic Wars , the place had to go through tribulations that other, more remote villages were spared.

Lignite has been mined in Olbersdorf since the middle of the 18th century . The beginnings of coal mining lay on the Kaltenstein. Because of the planned expansion of the opencast mine in the 1980s, Niederdorf fell into disrepair. To relocate the affected Olbersdorf and Zittau residents, a new residential area was built in the Oberdorf around 1988, the new building area with WBS-70 prefabricated buildings. Today, the new building area is made more attractive again as a "Grundbach settlement", primarily through the demolition and dismantling of the upper floors.

In 1999 the 2nd Saxon State Garden Show took place in Olbersdorf , during which the Olbersdorf open-cast mine was flooded and has been used for sporting and recreational purposes ever since.

The AG Niederdorf is committed to the expansion of the Niederdorf and created the Olbersdorf Mill Trail in 2013.
