Schönau-Berzdorf auf dem Eigen (officially Schönau-Berzdorf ad Eigen , Upper Sorbian Sunow-Bartono ) is a Saxon municipality in the district of Görlitz . It is located in the historical Eigen area and belongs to the Bernstadt / Schönau-Berzdorf administrative community .
Geography and traffic
The municipality of Schönau-Berzdorf is located in the eastern part of the district, about 9 km southwest of Görlitz and 15 km east of Löbau . The B 99 and the border with Poland run east of the municipality. The community is located on the newly created Berzdorfer See , which emerged from the Berzdorf open-cast lignite mine.
The community consists of the districts Kiesdorf auf dem Eigen and Schönau-Berzdorf auf dem Eigen. The latter was created in 1963 from the merger of Schönau auf dem Eigen and Berzdorf auf dem Eigen . The Neuberzdorf miners' settlement was built between Schönau and Berzdorf in 1920 .
history
The district of Schönau auf dem Eigen was first mentioned in 1264 and Berzdorf auf dem Eigen was first mentioned in 1280 as the property of the St. Marienstern monastery .
Around 1835 the first coal is mined using underground mining shafts. In the period that followed, mining was expanded into an open-cast mine, which was shut down and flooded in 1927. In 1946 the opencast mine was reopened, drained and coal was mined again. From 1962 Berzdorf was relocated, which on July 18, 1963 led to the merger of Schönau and Berzdorf. The demolition of the original village of Berzdorf and large parts of Neuberzdorf, which was created in 1920, by the Berzdorf opencast mine began in 1969.
The district of Kiesdorf auf dem Eigen was founded around the year 1200 (named after its leader Kezeling). In 1264 it was first mentioned in a document as the property of the St. Marienstern Monastery. Kiesdorf has been part of the Schönau-Berzdorf community since 1994.
