The official Sorbian settlement area includes all districts except Groß Radisch, Jerchwitz and Thräna.

history

The municipality of Hohendubrau came into being on July 1, 1995 when the municipalities of Gebelzig (with Groß Saubernitz and Sandförstgen), Groß Radisch (with Jerchwitz and Thräna) and Weigersdorf (with Dauban and Ober Prauske) merged.

The place Groß Radisch was first mentioned in the year 1422 as Radisschaw . The name comes from the Sorbian “place des Radiš” and is likely to be traced back to the founder of the place or to the Slavic god of war Radegast .

Jerchwitz used to be called "Erbisdorff" or "Erichsdorf". The current Sorbian name is derived from the term Jarczowice , which means something like "Village of Jarosh" or "Village of Jarik".

The place name of Thräna is derived from the Sorbian Drěnow (from "cornel cherry") or from trawa ("meadow" or "grass").

All districts were originally Sorbian-speaking. In 1884, according to Arnošt Muka , the Sorbian population was between 55% in Jerchwitz and 92% in Dauban. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking population of only 11, 2 and 25% in the communities of Gebelzig, Groß Radisch and Weigersdorf. Today the language has disappeared from everyday local life.
