The name prefix Groß serves to distinguish it from the village of Kleinsaubernitz (municipality of Malschwitz ) in the district of Bautzen, about four kilometers to the northwest .

geography

The place is located 20 km northeast of Bautzen and 30 km northwest of Görlitz on the northern edge of the Upper Lusatian area at around 165  m above sea level. NN . The area is hilly and rises to the south with the Groß-Saubernitzer Berg , located directly on the outskirts, up to 203  m above sea level. NN . The Schwarzwasser brook crosses Groß Saubernitz coming from Gebelzig in the direction of Guttau . In the extensive forest areas northwest of the village, which are already part of the Upper Lusatian heath and pond area, there are several fish ponds in the direction of the neighboring village of Dubrauke .

Groß Saubernitz is a square village , the extent of which has not changed significantly since around 1900.

history

Local history

The place is first mentioned in a document around 1400. A Petir by Sobirnicz can be found in a Bautzen tax register from this period . At the end of the 15th century (with interruptions) there is evidence that Groß Saubernitz belonged to Gut Gebelzig and later Nieder Gebelzig. Groß Saubernitz has been parish after Gebelzig since at least the 16th century, and it is generally assumed that it belonged to the parish in the pre-Reformation period.

Boundary stones No. 65 between the kingdoms of Saxony and Prussia near Groß Saubernitz

Until 1815, Groß Saubernitz and the Görlitz district of Upper Lusatia belonged to the Electorate of Saxony . After the Congress of Vienna , the new Prussian - Saxon border was drawn directly along Großsaubernitzer Berg, so that the place itself belonged to the province of Silesia or Lower Silesia ( Rothenburg district ) from now until 1945 . The village was surrounded on three sides by Saxon territory, only not on the east.

As a district of the municipality of Nieder Gebelzig, Groß Saubernitz came into the new municipality of Gebelzig in 1928 when Ober and Nieder Gebelzig merged . From 1952 to 1994 the community belonged to the Niesky district and from 1994 to the Lower Silesian Upper Lusatia District . On July 1, 1995, the communities of Gebelzig, Groß Radisch and Weigersdorf merged to form the community of Hohendubrau.

As early as 1994, a mechanical-biological sewage treatment plant was built in Groß Saubernitz for the communities Groß Radisch and Gebelzig (and thus their districts Groß Saubernitz, Jerchwitz , Sandförstgen and Thräna ).

Population development

year Residents
1825 149
1863 209
1880 181
2008 88

In 1777 there were four farmers, eleven gardeners and eight cottagers in Groß Saubernitz . Another economy is in desolation.

At the beginning and middle of the 19th century the population of Groß Saubernitz grew; the population increases from 149 in 1825 by 60 to 209 in 1863. In that year, an 80 percent Sorbian population was recorded. Around 20 years later, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 181 inhabitants; 149 of them were Sorbs (82%) and 32 were Germans. Today, Sorbian has disappeared from everyday life in Groß Saubernitz.

There are no officially recorded population figures for the 20th century. As of June 30, 2008, Groß Saubernitz had 88 inhabitants, making it the fourth smallest district of Hohendubraus.

Place name

In addition to the name Sobirnicz , which was used around 1400, there is also 1408 Sawbernicz . In 1419, Groß- and Kleinsaubernitz were officially mentioned as Zaubernicz magna and Zaubernicz parva , which at the same time - according to the current state of knowledge - represents the first documentary mention of Kleinsaubernitz, although that place is probably much older than Groß Saubernitz.

For Kleinsaubernitz there are 1490 Sawbernicz and 1504 Cleyne Sawbernicz , Groß Saubernitz is mentioned in 1572 as Sawernitz . The current names are passed down as Kleinsaubernitz in 1658 and as Groß Saubernitz and Klein Sauberniz in 1791 .

In the Sorbian names of the two places, Zubornica (Groß Saubernitz) and Zubornička (Kleinsaubernitz) have prevailed. The distinction between the two places is formed with the diminutive syllable -k, although Wulka Suborniza and Mala Subornicza can still be identified around 1800 . In 1843 Zubernica and Mała Zubernica were named, in 1886 Zubernička appeared for Kleinsaubernitz.

The German and Sorbian forms of the name are derived from the Old Sorbian word zubr " Auerochse , Wisent ".
