history

Evangelical Church in Malschwitz

The place name is of Sorbian origin and comes from a personal name Mališ or Małyš (Sorbian mały = "small"). Already before the year 1000 a Milzener Fürstengut and after 1000 a royal table good around Kleinbautzen and Preititz were mentioned. The first verifiable mention of the place as Malswiz comes from 1225. Around 1430 Malschwitz is mentioned as a knight's seat .

On April 12, 1715, a fire destroyed the half-timbered church, the school, the manor and 14 farms. The new church was built in 1716 in massive construction on the same site. The current tower was not added until 1913.

In the Battle of Bautzen on May 20 and 21, 1813, Malschwitz became a battlefield. The embattled village burned down.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 582 for the place in the 1880s; 554 of them were Sorbs (95%) and 28 were Germans. According to Ernst Tschernik , a majority of 60.6% of the population was still Sorbian-speaking in 1956 . The language change to German took place largely in the second half of the 20th century.

During research drilling in 1998, the hidden Maar of Baruth , which is not visible on the earth's surface, was confirmed. The "Baruth volcanic group", consisting of the volcanoes near Baruth and Guttau and the hidden craters (maars) near Baruth and Kleinsaubernitz, is therefore a safe bet. These originated in the tertiary 22 to 27 million years ago.

Incorporations

In 1936 the community Pließkowitz was incorporated. In the course of the municipal reform of 1994, the municipalities of Baruth, Kleinbautzen , Malschwitz and Niedergurig were merged to form the new municipality of Malschwitz. On January 1, 2013, it merged with the neighboring community of Guttau (until 1995 communities of Neudorf / Halbendorf, Kleinsaubernitz and Guttau).
