geography

Lömischau is located about 14 kilometers northeast of the district town of Bautzen in the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape Biosphere Reserve to the left of the Löbauer Water , not far from its confluence with the Spree . The neighboring towns are Wartha in the east, Guttau in the south, Spreewiese on the other bank of the Spree in the west and Halbendorf / Spree in the north.

history

The street village was first mentioned around 1400 as Lemschaw or Lemmeschaw and belonged to the parish of Guttau at the latest since the 16th century. The Sorbian place name is derived from a personal name Lemeš ("settlement of Lemeš"), which in turn is based on a Slavic word for "ploughshare, plow iron" (cf. Czech lemeš , Polish lemiesz ). In 1884 Arnošt Muka had a total of 111 inhabitants in Lömischau, 108 of them Sorbs and only three Germans. In 1925 the village had 107 inhabitants, all of whom were of the Evangelical Lutheran denomination. In 1936, the previously independent Lömischau was incorporated into Wartha.

The proportion of the Sorbian-speaking population - as in the entire Protestant region north-east of Bautzen - fell sharply, especially in the second half of the 20th century.

The Lömischauer Chapel

In 2015 the village chapel next to the inn was consecrated. The building was a private initiative of the former host family. In the chapel there is a bell that was cast in Prague in the 18th century .
