geography

The Spree in Halbendorf

Halbendorf is located about 20 kilometers northeast of the large district town of Bautzen in the middle of the Upper Lusatian heath and pond landscape . The place lies on both sides of the Spree , whereby the actual half- village is to the west, the formerly independent village Geißlitz is to the east of the river. The place, which has now grown together, is surrounded on all sides by dense forests. In the north is the neighboring village of Neudorf / Spree and in the south Lömischau , while the forests in the east stretch over seven kilometers to Förstgen in the district of Görlitz . Above and below Halbendorf oxbow lakes still remind of the original meandering course of the Spree. Some of them have been restored since 2018.

After the settlement, the old Halbendorf on the left bank of the Spree is a manor settlement, while Geißlitz on the right bank of the river is a street perch village .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1374 as Halbindorff . Four years earlier, the district of Geißlitz was first mentioned as Gyselicz . Until the 19th century, Halbendorf was under the rule of the local manor, while Geißlitz was under that of the Zimpel manor . As a result, the district boundary between Görlitz and Bautzen ran along the Spree through the middle of today's town until after 1800 .

Until June 1, 1977, Halbendorf was an independent rural community; then it was incorporated into neighboring Neudorf. With the municipal reform in 1994, Neudorf and Halbendorf became part of the Guttau municipality. On January 1, 2013, Guttau was incorporated into Malschwitz.

population

In 1890 Halbendorf had only 81 inhabitants, while Geißlitz had 109 inhabitants. For his statistics on the Sorbian population of Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a few years before a total population of 243 for both places; 238 of them were Sorbs (98%) and five were Germans. In 1956 the Sorbian-speaking population in the municipality was still 71.3%. Since then it has continued to decline sharply.

The population of the two places rose to 336 inhabitants by 1963; since then it has fallen significantly again, especially after 1990.

Halbendorf and Geißlitz have been evangelical-Lutheran in the Lausitz since the Reformation and parish to Klix since at least 1614 . Halbendorf itself has a small church, consecrated in 1952. The last figures on religious affiliation are from 1925. At that time all residents were of the Evangelical Lutheran denomination.

Infrastructure

Halbendorf is on the district road from Neudorf to Guttau, about seven kilometers from state road 109 (Bautzen– Niesky ) and four kilometers from federal road 156 (Bautzen– Weißwasser ). The next junction of the federal motorway 4 ( Dresden - Wrocław ), Bautzen-Ost , is 16 kilometers south.

The Lausitzer Schlange long-distance hiking trail and the Spreeradweg lead through Halbendorf. The Waldschulheim Halbendorf with 88 beds has existed in the village since 1928.
