Guttau is located in the east of the above-mentioned district on the southern edge of the Upper Lusatian heath and pond landscape . There are several large ponds in the area. The place is located about 11 km northeast of the district town of Bautzen near the Bautzen dam and is north of the A4 . This can be reached via the Bautzen-Ost connection (approx. 10 km). The Spree flows northwest of Guttau .

history

Guttau was first mentioned as Guttin on February 25, 1222 . The place name comes from the Old Sorbian Gutina and means "settlement on / in the dense forest", cf. Czech hutný , "dense, firm" or Upper Sorbian husto , "dense".

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 340 inhabitants around 1885; of these, 318 were Sorbs (94%) and 22 were Germans. In 1956, the Sorbian-speaking population in the municipality was only 57.3%. Since then it has continued to decline sharply.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent municipality of Wartha was incorporated.

On January 1, 2013, the community of Guttau was incorporated into Malschwitz. Before that, the Malschwitz administrative community joined forces since 1996 . Before its dissolution, the municipality of Guttau consisted of the following nine districts (population figures from 2008):

Guttau also included the Neudörfel district , incorporated in 1938 , a house reduction in the Guttau and Kleinsaubernitz corridors, divided by the Alte Fließ (also called Dubrauker Fließ), an arm of the Löbauer water . On December 31, 2011, the municipality had 1581 inhabitants and an area of ​​41.66 km².
