history

Ruins of Kemnitz Castle
Church Beheading of St. John the Baptist

Kemnitz was one of the headquarters of Gotsche Schoff , who came to Silesia with the Duchess Hedwig, later canonized Hedwig von Andechs . Kemnitz Castle is said to have been built by Duke Heinrich II the Pious , who died in 1241. One year later, Kemnitz Castle is said to have been bequeathed to the Gotsche Schoff family by his son Boleslaw II . However, the authenticity of the document, dated 1242, is in some cases questioned. According to this, there should also have been a castellany in Kemnitz . Kemnitz belonged to the Duchy of Schweidnitz-Jauer , with which it fell to Bohemia under inheritance law after the death of Duke Bolko I in 1368 . However, his widow, the Duchess Agnes , was entitled to a lifelong usufruct . An existing residential tower was expanded by the Schaffgotsch in 1562 into a palace in the Renaissance style. The year is in the portal inscription. Under Hans Ulrich von Schaffgotsch , the castle was rebuilt in 1617 and a garden was added. During the Reformation , the church of St. John the Baptist , for which the Schaffgotsch foundations had established in 1370 and 1380, served as a Protestant church. In the Thirty Years War she was re-Catholicized.

After the First Silesian War in 1742, Kemnitz and most of Silesia fell to Prussia . A year later a Protestant church was built. From 1816 Kemnitz belonged to the Hirschberg district in the Giant Mountains , with which it remained connected until 1945. In 1933 there were 1321 inhabitants, in 1939 there were 1354.

As a result of the Second World War, Altkemnitz fell to Poland in 1945. It was first renamed Kamienica and in 1946 Stara Kamienica . The German population was largely expelled . Some of the new settlers were displaced from eastern Poland , which had fallen to the Soviet Union.
