history
Grömitz has been a seaside resort since 1813, making it one of the oldest on the Baltic Sea . Apart from the church from the 13th century, the place does not offer any historically significant sites that are still visible.
The place name Grömitz developed from the West Slavic name of a brook. There was a village called Groebeniz fortified with a rampart , of which nothing is left today, as the fortifications were mostly made of wood. The weir system was later moved to Oldenburg in Holstein . In contrast to Grömitz, the remains of this rampart can still be seen there today. A museum in Oldenburg gives an overview of the former importance.
Churches
- St. Nicolai (Evangelical-Lutheran), Kirchenstrasse
- St. Bonifatius (Roman Catholic), Christian-Westphal-Straße
In the course of the missionary work of the Wends , the church consecrated to Nikolaus von Myra was built around 1230 . It is first mentioned in 1259 in the list of churches belonging to the Diocese of Lübeck . At that time Grömitz belonged to the Knights of Westensee , who sold it to the Benedictine monastery Cismar in 1323 . While the single-nave rectangular nave and the box-shaped choir were built from boulders in the 13th century , the massive brick tower was added in the 15th century when Grömitz was granted city rights .
The monastery Cismar, located in the municipality today announced, prior to the introduction of the Reformation in 1560 Grömitz an important place of pilgrimage for the people of northern Europe is by John mineral spring and Blood of Christ - relic . The spiritual significance of the monastery can still be guessed at in the Danish State Library , which is home to many important works that originally come from the Cismar monastery. In a wing of the partially preserved monastery there is a branch of the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum.
port
As early as 1400, Grömitz owned a sea-going port and traded with ports on the Trave . Lübeck , Travemünde , Oldesloe and also Danish cities were among the main trading places of Grömitz ships. The harbor benefited from natural sandbanks such as the Walkyriengrund . The port silted up in the 17th century, which meant that long-distance trade lost its importance again. At the end of the 1960s, a modern marina was built south of the built-up part .
The neighboring town of Neustadt , twelve kilometers to the southwest, is closely linked to the economic history of Grömitz. Already the Hanseatic period turned the port of Neustadt an important and interesting point of contact for Dutch and Danish ships represent. Ships of the Hanseatic League ( universos mercatores de hansa Theutonicorum ) ran the Neustadt port only rarely, because Neustadt did not belong to the Hanseatic League, but Lübsches law had . This made the city all the more interesting for Dutch merchants and also for the Vitalien brothers , because no stacking rights had to be observed. The main sources of income for small villages like Grömitz were agriculture (supported by the Cismar monastery) and fishing . Thus, small towns like Grömitz also made a modest share in one of the main trade goods of the Hanseatic League - salted herring in barrels that were exported from the Neustadt port.
tourism
Christian Westphal promoted tourism as honorary mayor of Grömitz (term of office from 1896 to 1924). As a builder, he built hotels and guest houses. A fountain on the promenade was donated in his honor. Since 1949 Grömitz has been known as a spa on the Baltic Sea.
