The Zoo Arche Noah Grömitz is a zoo in the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea resort of Grömitz , located within the village on the federal highway 501 . Due to its predominantly exotic animal population, it has the “most typical zoo” appearance among the zoo in Schleswig-Holstein, along with the zoo in Gettorf.

history

The zoo was opened as a family business by Hans Wilhelm on April 14, 1976 and is now run by Ingo Wilhelm in the second generation. Hans Wilhelm's brother Uwe has been running the zoo in Braunschweig, which formerly also operated under the name Arche Noah , since 1978 . Popular attractions in the early years that did not correspond to animal welfare were the baby elephant and the humanized chimpanzee Alfred . From 1990 to 2008 ligers , a cross between a lion and a tiger, could also be seen in the zoo . The three animals born in 1990 in Grömitz were the unintended product of keeping the two species together in one enclosure. With Bahier , a confiscated animal that lived in Grömitz since 2002, died allegedly the last Liger in a European zoo.

Investments

The somewhat lower-lying, wooded, older part of the zoo, which is also home to a restaurant and children's playground, is joined by newer, larger-scale facilities in the north and south. These are various pastures, a facility for trampoline animals , a walk-in system for Cameroon sheep and a community system for emus and Bennet kangaroos (partially walkable) in the southern part, as well as an Africa system that is currently under construction and a large, also walk-in South America area. Plant with rheas and llamas in the northern part. It is noteworthy that in the accessible facilities there is no route for visitors, which allows them to stay on almost the entire area of the enclosure.

In the older part of the zoo there is a petting enclosure with dwarf goats , an enclosure for dwarf donkeys and a seal facility, the modernization of which is to be the zoo's next major project. With raccoons (also the raccoon dogs , which are also naturalized to Germany, are kept), coatis , black-tailed prairie dogs and white-tailed porcupines , several species that attract the public, as they are quite lively, smaller mammals are represented. Several outlets for guinea pigs and rabbits are grouped around the porcupine enclosure . Lisztaffen , red-faced macaques and bald lemurs represent different primate forms of South America, Asia and Madagascar. To the east of two ponds with water fowl there are facilities for big cats ( lions , leopards and lynxes ) around the play and relaxation area , as well as a stork meadow and a facility for large maras .

Chimpanzee enclosure

The one-hectare chimpanzee enclosure, which opened in 2012, is currently inhabited by eight animals. The zoo explains the long construction period of around ten years with a high proportion of personal work and the associated cost savings. The operating costs are also comparatively low. The approximately 400 square meter house has a hill surrounded by a wide moat, which is mainly structured by climbing frames. Six years after its completion, the ape enclosure was awarded the BdZ Beaver 2016 by the professional association of zoo animal keepers , a prize for outstanding animal enclosures in German-speaking countries. Among other things, the good energy balance and the didactic preparation were highlighted.

Education and conservation

Commentary feedings for selected animal species complement the extensive signage of the newer systems. A zoo school offers space for extra-curricular learning. For the protection of native animals, the zoo participates, among other things, in the bat-friendly house campaign initiated by the BUND and advertises to be the first bat-friendly zoo in Germany.
