The European WingTsun Organization (EWTO) is a commercial martial arts organization with licensed contract schools in various countries. It is a department of WingTsun GmbH & Co. KG . The founder and head of the EWTO is Keith Kernspecht , who is also one of the managing directors of WingTsun GmbH & Co. KG.

deals

The core of the EWTO teaching content taught by the licensed contract schools is Wing Tsun , a style of the martial art Wing Chun that goes back to Leung Ting . As in other martial arts, it is taught not to work against the strength of the opponent, but to absorb the attacks "softly" and use the strength against the opponent. Independent of this, additional courses are offered, such as the Escrima introduced in 1977 and the ChiKung health training program.

history

In 1976, at that time still known as the German Wing Tsun Association, the specialist body of the German Karate Association promoted the first German Wing Tsun textbook. The Bild-Zeitung in Hanover of June 8th and June 9th 1976 reported in detail about Kernspecht's teacher Leung Ting's first visit to Germany .

In 1979 the organization relocated its office to Heidelberg and 1980 to Neckarsteinach . From 1982 to 2009 the administration and the trainer academy were located in Langenzell Castle, Wiesenbach (Baden) . Another move to Heidelberg took place in 2010.

The EWTO has contributed significantly to the commercialization of individual styles of Wing Chun in German-speaking countries.

distribution

The EWTO has schools in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Trademark protection

Wing Tsun, a brand name originally registered by Sepp Schembri in 1982 , is a separate romanization of 咏 春 (yǒng chūn, Cantonese: Wing Chun). In March 2009, the Wing Tsun trademark, owned by Keith R. Kernspecht, was declared invalid.

Keith R. Kernspecht currently has various trademarks protected. So also z. B. the brand name Leung Ting Wingtsun. The approach to trademark protection is often viewed very critically, as Keith R. Kernspecht also had trademarks protected over the years that were not directly connected to the organization he founded. This made it difficult for competitors to differentiate themselves by name from the EWTO or Wing Tsun. This multitude of protected brands was unique in the German martial arts landscape to date.

Commercialization

The licensed contract schools of the EWTO work as franchising companies . To do this, they must be in possession of an area license to be renewed regularly for a specified postcode district, which creates regional area protection . The costs for the student are divided into fees for the association and for the independent regional school.

All licensed contract schools teach according to the standardized EWTO program, whereby a corresponding internal graduation examination is required for the next learning level. The exact cost structure depends on the respective licensed contract school, total costs of well over a thousand euros up to the 12th grade are possible, which are spread over about four years or more. Originally, student and master degrees were unusual in Chinese martial arts, as they have no hierarchies apart from the master / student relationship or - with family styles such as Wing Chun - father / son. All grades tested internally by the EWTO are only valid within the EWTO structure.
