About this picture

Großenbrode is a municipality in the Ostholstein district in Schleswig-Holstein .

geography

Großenbrode is located north of the Lübeck Bay - about 80 km from Lübeck - on the Wagrian peninsula , directly on the Fehmarn Sound . Surrounded on three sides by water and thus 15 km of varied coastline, the seaside spa is one of the most rain-poor and sunniest areas in Germany. The community of Großenbrode consists of several districts: Großenbroderfähre, Großenbroderfelde, Großenbroder Kai, Heinrichsruh, Lütjenbrode, Klaustorf, von Herwarthstraße. The entire municipality is surrounded by water and beach, with the long bathing beach ("south beach") facing southeast.

Welcome to Großenbrode

history

Located on the Vogelfluglinie , Großenbrode has been settled for centuries. Together with the neighboring Lütjenbrode, the village was first mentioned in 1249. Since 1640 it has been designated as a noble estate and became a rural community in the course of the reorganization of the Prussian administration in 1867 . Striking in the layout of the village is the very large village square and the typical image of a "Wendish rectangle", as can be found in several places in northern Germany.

The church of St. Katharinen , first mentioned in 1230, is mostly made of bricks. Only in the east is there rock in the walls. The wooden tower towers just a little over the church. The choir of the simple church has a vault, the nave has a flat ceiling. The carved wood altar dates from 1604, the pulpit from 1713.

Grossenbrode has always been a transition to Fehmarn . Its name is derived from the Wendish Brody , which means 'ford', from which the name of the village developed.

There is a large barrow near the "Old Sound" . It is a large long bed called the Krausort long bed or Kronsteinberg long bed and is around 100 meters long. The boulder blocks are carefully hidden under trees and bushes.

North of Lütjenbrode, between the B 207 and the Baltic Sea, there are two Neolithic large stone graves in a strip of dunes. While the southern one has been badly damaged, so many boulders have survived from the northern one that a reconstruction could be carried out. Another megalithic grave was located on the so-called “Königsweg” until 1960. It fell victim to the construction work for the Vogelfluglinie because it was in the street. A large stone in this barrow could be saved. He is now with a plaque in the village square.

On December 26, 1931, Reinhard Heydrich and Lina von Osten married in the Protestant village church of Großenbrode.

During the Second World War, Großenbrode was the location of the Greatbrode Sea Air Force Base (1937–1945) with a Wehrmacht emergency team . The area was used from 1951 to 1963 for the ferry connection between Großenbrode Kai and Gedser , Denmark .

In the post-war years, the barracks were used as a British prisoner-of-war camp . Until 1995, the Federal Navy with the Naval Coast Service School was the user of this site. Today the properties are used for a nursing home for the elderly, a marina (especially for sea anglers and sailors) with associated boatyards and tourism, as well as a holiday village based on the Swedish model.

In addition to the German Navy, the Air Force also had a facility in Großenbrode. Until 2004 the telecommunications regiment 71 with telecommunications sector A was housed in the Fehmarnsund barracks. A Lockheed T-33 was posted at the station until 2003. In the barracks were the accommodations for the soldiers who were on duty in Tower A in Klaustorf. The tower, also popularly known as Spökenkieker , visible from afar in Ostholstein, was used for electronic reconnaissance up to a distance of 600 km. It was one of five telecommunications sector towers of the Luftwaffe along the German-German border: Tower A in Klaustorf, Tower B on the Thurauer Berg near Dannenberg , Tower C on the Stöberhai near Osterode , Tower E on the Schneeberg near Wunsiedel and Tower F on the Hohen Bogen near Bad Kötzting . The tower is about 75 meters high and has 16 floors. It now serves as a lookout tower. The Fehmarnsund Barracks was dismantled from 2008.

Religions

Grossenbrode is mostly Protestant . There is an Evangelical Lutheran parish in town. The services are held, partly in Low German dialect , in the St. Catherine's Church , built in the 13th century .

Train station

Großenbrode is located on the Vogelfluglinie ( A 1 / B 207) of Lübeck to Fehmarn and has since 2003 a regional station of the railroad .

On July 15, 1951, the Deutsche Bundesbahn and the Danske Statsbaner opened a provisional ferry service between the Grossenbrode Kai station and Gedser on the Danish island of Falster as the forerunner of today's Vogelfluglinie. The construction of the connection from Großenbrode to Puttgarden in the north of Fehmarn did not begin until 1958. On May 14, 1963, the Vogelfluglinie opened in its current form with the Fehmarnsund Bridge and the ferry connection across the Fehmarnbelt, and the “Großenbrode Kai” station was closed.

Until 1963 there was a railway ferry from Großenbrode Ferry across Fehmarnsund to the place of the same name Fehmarnsund on the island of Fehmarn .

In the district of Lütjenbrode there was one of the first track diagram signal boxes of the Deutsche Bundesbahn. It was responsible for regulating the traffic on the triangle formed by the Vogelfluglinie and the branch line to Heiligenhafen .

Großenbrode is also connected to the Baltic Sea Cycle Route , which u. a. leads to Lübeck and Kiel as well as a European EuroVelo route around the Baltic Sea.

Tuckerscup

The Tuckerscup has been a tourist event that has been held annually at the end of July and beginning of August since 2002. Since its inception, the four-day program has included a regatta for catamarans , according to the rules of the Ronde om Texel , as well as several water sports events for children; In addition, open air concerts by cover bands in the evening and then discover events. The Tuckerscup is of economic importance for the community of Großenbrode, as the number of visitors to hotels and holiday complexes in the area increases during the event.

As early as 1966, Großenbrode was awarded the title of a seaside resort. The offer for guests in Großenbrode was constantly expanded. The promenade on the south beach was built and a spa park was set up. The pier , which extends approx. 230 m into the Baltic Sea, represents a further enrichment from 1979 on.

At the end of 1986 Großenbrode was awarded the status of a Baltic Sea spa. The spa center offers classic massages, mud packs, therapeutic gymnastics, med. Baths, inhalation and a seawater swimming pool for medical therapy and prevention.

The quality of the bathing water in Großenbrode has been awarded. The “Blue Board” award is a sign of constant monitoring of the bathing water and compliance with the chemical and bacteriological EC guidelines at the bathing areas. It is certified hygienically perfect and harmless to health water.

With the dissolution of the Naval Coast Service School in 1995, which bordered directly on the south beach, approx. 80 hectares became available . This area was acquired by the community of Großenbrode and made available for tourist use as the Großenbrode nature discovery trail . The existing promenade was extended by approx. 500 m. The subsequent 1000 m long pier is now available to anglers, hikers and all nature lovers. A sports boat harbor as well as harbor-related and tourist businesses have settled in the new “Am Kai” district.

Exhibitions on the marine region and developments up to the primeval and ice ages as well as a complex aquarium system are shown. The associated observation tower has been open to visitors to the Baltic Sea Adventure World since 2017.

The Fehmarnsund Bridge, located in the immediate vicinity north-west of Großenbrode, as a connection to the island of Fehmarn, is an attraction for the entire region. The bridge has been a listed building since 1999. The road and rail bridge also has a bicycle and footpath.
