The 2008 local elections in Schleswig-Holstein took place on Sunday, May 25, 2008.

The approximately 2.3 million voters voted on new council assemblies and community councils in over 1,000 communities (community elections ). In addition, the district assemblies were newly elected in the eleven districts of the country (district election).

In the circles Segeberg and county Rendsburg-Eckernförde were by direct election , the county councilors elected. In addition, mayors were appointed by direct election in 14 municipalities.

Result

In the district election, the turnout was 49.4% (2003: 54.4%). The provisional official final result of the district election (i.e. for the independent cities and districts) was:

Legal

  • The Federal Constitutional Court has on 13 February 2008 following a request of the parties Alliance 90 / The Greens, National Association Schleswig-Holstein, and the Left Party, National Association of Schleswig-Holstein, the five-percent clause removed.
  • In around 30 municipalities with fewer than 70 inhabitants, no municipal councils were elected according to state law. In these communities all citizens form a community assembly .
  • All EU citizens aged 16 and over residing in Schleswig-Holstein had the right to vote.

  • Different interpretations of section 10 (4) sentences 2 and 3 GWKG led to disputes over the allocation of seats in different municipalities. The administrative court denied the SPD an additional seat in the Bad Segeberg city council. This wants to move before the Higher Administrative Court .

Parties

The following parties took part in the elections at the district level: CDU, SPD, FDP, GRÜNE, SSW, LINKE, INDEPENDENT , NPD, consumer protection party , center and several groups of voters .
