Thurau im Wendland is part of the Woltersdorf community .
The Lucie Canal , which drains to the west, runs north of the village . A great view of the surrounding landscape is possible from the nearby Thurauer Berg. There you will also find the 90 meter high Thurauer Tower, the former reconnaissance tower B of the German Armed Forces , which makes the place locatable from several kilometers away. The soldiers of the air force and the army who worked on the tower were housed in the Neu Tramm barracks.
The name Thurau goes back to the Polish expression for aurochs .
On July 1, 1972, Thurau was incorporated into the Woltersdorf community.
