The Aguamilpa dam (Spanish: "embalse de Aguamilpa" or "presa Aguamilpa") is located in Mexico on the Río Grande de Santiago in the state of Nayarit around 50 km north of Tepic . Other neighboring towns are Nayar, La Yesca and Santa María del Oro.
The dam , built in 1993, is 187 m high and one of the largest in Latin America. The reservoir holds almost 7 billion cubic meters. It dams the Santiago for 50 km and the Huaynamota for 20 km. The associated hydropower plant generates 960 megawatts. It is one of the largest in the country and is to be expanded to 1,600 MW in a second phase.
