history
During construction work near the district of Lichtenberg on the edge of the Geestinsel of the Öring, soil discolouration and ceramic shards were found in 1986. Excavations between 1987 and 1993 uncovered numerous stone tools that were dated to an age of 55,000 years and assigned to the Neanderthal . It is probably a prehistoric hunting ground. The excavations also revealed traces of recent settlement in the area. Ceramic shards from the younger Bronze Age , the pre-Roman Iron Age , the Roman Imperial Age and the Middle Ages were found. The finds from Lichtenberg are in the collection of the Prehistory Department of the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover.
The discovery of an approximately 50,000 year old hand ax also indicates the early presence of humans in the area around Woltersdorf. Another find is a gold ring from the older Bronze Age (approx. 1100–1550 BC).
At the time of the Germanic settlement, the tribe of the Longobards lived in the area around Woltersdorf. After the Great Migration , Slavs settled in this area in Rundling villages , from which the name Wendland can be traced back. The "Götzenstein", which was walled into the field church as an image of a face, indicates the Slavic settlement .
Woltersdorf was first mentioned in a document in the 14th century. The oldest forms of the name were Waltistorpe (1371), Wolterstorpe (1395) and finally Woltersdorf in 1450.
