It has an area of ​​51.81 km² and is part of the Göhrde state forest . In the northeast and east it borders on the municipality of Göhrde , in the southeast and south on the municipality of Zernien of the same district, in the southwest and west on the district of Uelzen and in the northwest and north on the district of Lüneburg .

The community-free area is uninhabited. The inhabited enclaves Kollase , Röthen and Zienitz within the area are part of the municipality of Göhrde.
