Damnatz (pronunciation: [ damˈnaːt͡s ], stressed on the second syllable with a long a ) is a municipality in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district in Lower Saxony .

Geographical location

Damnatz is located in the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve directly on the Elbe . The community belongs to the Elbtalaue community , which has its administrative seat in the city of Dannenberg (Elbe) .

Community structure

The municipality of Damnatz has existed since the municipal reform of 1972 from the following five districts.

  • Barnitz
  • Damnatz
  • Jasebeck
  • Cameroon
  • Land set

In addition, there are two residential areas in the Jasebeck and Uhlenhorst residential areas.

Before 1972 Barnitz and Cameroon belonged to the Damnatz municipality; Jasebeck and Uhlenhorst to Landsatz.

history

Old names of Damnatz are 1330/50 enen hof in der lantwere Domnitze, 1348 vor teyn rode landes to domnatze, 1450/51 Dampnatze, Damnatze, ca.1710 Damatz, 1858 Damnaze, the church village on the Elbe and 1939 Damnatz. The place name is of Slavic origin. Two different basic forms are possible for the name interpretation. One possibility is "Domanici" for people, descendants, subjects. The second interpretation is "Dab`nica" for place on oak trees, oak groves.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1972, the neighboring municipality of Landsatz was added.

The municipality of Damnatz belongs to the state electoral district 48 Elbe and to the federal electoral district 38 Lüchow-Dannenberg - Lüneburg .

Municipal council

As a result of the 2011 local elections, the Damnatz municipality consists of a councilwoman and six councilors, all from the Damnatz voter community.

Theaters and museums

Damnatz is home to the Damnatz sculpture garden , which was founded in 1994 by the artist couple Monika Müller-Klug and Klaus Müller-Klug with the support of the Foundation for Sculpture . The site of the sculpture garden is a former parish garden located directly on the Elbe. Until 2012, 30 large sculptures by 10 different artists stood on the 10,000 square meter site. A collection from the fields of sculpture, painting and installation is being created in a former barn converted into an exhibition and event space. The building is used as a location for art exhibitions, concerts and readings at regular intervals.

Since February 2011, music, cabaret and cabaret events have been presented in the Damnatz cultural tennis court , as well as film screenings (rarely seen films), lectures on various topics (science, literature) and art exhibitions.

Every year in July the open-air "D-MOVE Damnatz Rockt" takes place in Damnatz. The name is derived from "D" for Damnatz and "Move" for moving. The event attracts numerous visitors every year. All genre classics from rock and metal are played .

Buildings

In the main town there is a small half-timbered church from 1617. It has a single-manual organ. The troop of Napoleonic soldiers who holed up in the church in 1813 is legendary. Bullet holes from this period are still there.

The writer Nicolas Born is buried in the Damnatz cemetery. His grave is adorned with a sculpture by the sculptor Klaus Müller-Klug .
