history
Archaeological finds suggest that the Göhrde was already settled in prehistoric times. The ground monuments in the Göhrde include, above all, two Neolithic large stone graves near Grünhagen (Leitstade I and II), which were built before 2500 BC. And the sacrificial stone from Plumbohm .
The Göhrde has been a popular hunting ground for the nobles since the early 16th century. In the years 1706-1709 the Hanoverian Elector Georg Ludwig in today's district Göhrde, designed by Louis Remy de la Fosse , the hunting lodge Göhrde as a three-storey castle building with about 100 rooms and several outbuildings built.
On September 16, 1813, the Allied Northern Army (mainly Russian and Prussian troops) defeated the French troops of Napoleon I in the Battle of Göhrde about 20 kilometers west of Dannenberg (Elbe) near Lüben (in the Lüneburg district) .
After 1819, individual buildings of the hunting lodge and in 1827 the castle itself were demolished. Only after the establishment of the Kingdom of Hanover in 1837 were some buildings renovated, and the Göhrde became a princely hunting ground again . From 1869 to 1913, the German emperors regularly hunted in the hunting lodge. After that, the hunting lodge was a recreation center for civil servants, a seminary and a military hospital . In 1957 the so-called Europahaus was built for conferences and seminars. In 1977 a guest house was built on the site of the demolished hunting lodge .
Construction of the Wendland Railway through the Göhrde with the Göhrde station in Breese (opening of the Buchholz – Lüneburg – Dannenberg – Wittenberge line in 1874), which still runs to Dannenberg, began as early as the middle of the 19th century . Since 1995, this connection has become known nationwide through the annual Castor transports to the Gorleben nuclear waste interim storage facility , which take this route to the Dannenberg loading station. The protests against these transports and the massive presence of the police have shaped the Wendland since then. Every year, residents offer their barns and houses to hundreds of people who oppose nuclear power . The nationwide anti-nuclear magazine anti atom aktuell has its editorial office in the Tollendorf district.
During the Cold War , Sarenseck was the location of a permanent deployment of the low-flying reporting and control service of the Air Force ( DEST TMLD ), IV. FmRgt / 33.
The railway line from Uelzen to Dannenberg further south was closed for passenger traffic in 1981 and completely shut down in the 1990s .
Until January 29, 1976, the name of the newly formed municipality in 1972 was Metzingen .
