The joint municipality Elbtalaue is a joint municipality in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district . It was formed on November 1, 2006 from the joint municipalities of Dannenberg (Elbe) and Hitzacker (Elbe) . The basis for this is the Lower Saxony law to strengthen local self-government in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district . The seat of the joint community is the city of Dannenberg (Elbe) . There is a branch office of the administration in the city of Hitzacker (Elbe) .
Joint community structure
Since November 1, 2006, the Elbtalaue community has comprised two cities and eight communities. The community-free area of Göhrde does not belong to the integrated community.

The Elbtalaue community is part of the state electoral district 48 Elbe and the federal electoral district 38 Lüchow-Dannenberg - Lüneburg .
Joint council
The council of the Elbtalaue community consists of 34 councilors. This is the specified number for a joint municipality with a population of between 20,001 and 25,000. The 34 council members are elected by local elections for five years each. The current term of office began on November 1, 2016 and ends on October 31, 2021.
The full-time Mayor of the Joint Municipality, Jürgen Meyer (independent), is also entitled to vote in the Council of the Joint Community.
The last local election on September 11, 2016 had the following result:

Joint mayor of the municipality
Jürgen Meyer (independent) has been the full-time mayor of the joint municipality of Elbtalaue since 2006. In the last mayoral election on May 25, 2014, he was re-elected as incumbent with 51.2% of the vote. The turnout was 50.8%. Meyer began his further term on November 1, 2014.
