Jürgen Udolph (born February 6, 1943 in Berlin-Pankow ) is a German onomastics ( onomastics ). He was a professor at the University of Leipzig .

Life

In 1978 Udolph received his doctorate from the University of Göttingen . The topic of the dissertation was studies on Slavic water names and water names . Hence the main interest of his further work also lies here. In 1990 he completed his habilitation with the thesis The position of the names of waters in Poland within the old European hydronymy . In 2000 he was offered the professorship for onomastics at the University of Leipzig , where he was the head of the name advice center of the Society for onomastics e. V. was. In 2008 he retired .

At the University of Münster , he headed the place-names department , which, as a long-term project, place names between the Rhine and Elbe - onomastics in Europe, recorded and explained place names in this area. The Academy of Sciences in Göttingen elected Udolph in the meeting on January 27, 2006 as a corresponding member of the Philological-Historical Class.

Since March 2011 Udolph has headed his own Prof. Udolph Center for Name Research in Leipzig.

The aim is to clarify tolerance and openness to the world in the past and present of Oranienburg. Since 2011, Antenne Brandenburg has broadcast the program Examen für Namen . out

Private

Udolph has been married since 1971 and has four children. He has been a member of Wingolf in Göttingen and Heidelberg since 1964 .
