Delbert Martin Mann (born January 30, 1920 in Lawrence (Kansas) , † November 11, 2007 in Los Angeles ; actually Delbert Martin Mann Jr. ) was an American film and television director.

life and career

Delbert Mann was awarded the Oscar for best director for his first feature film Marty in 1956 , after Marty had already won the Palme d'Or 'Best Film' at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, along with numerous other awards . The Directors Guild of America honored him later in his career with the Robert B. Aldrich Achievement Award (1997) and the Honorary Life Member Award (2002). In 1960, Mann received a star on the Walk of Fame .

As a director, he was involved in a total of 65 film and television productions. Since the late 1960s, he had mainly worked for television, including some productions as a producer.

From 1967 to 1971, Mann was chairman of the Directors Guild of America. From 1941 until her death in 2001 he was married to Ann Caroline Gillespie ; the marriage resulted in four children.
