Martha Coolidge

Martha Coolidge (born August 17, 1946 in New Haven (Connecticut) ) is an American director and television producer , whose films mostly have a comedic-feminist background.

Martha Coolidge graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a bachelor's degree in 1968 and a Master of Fine Arts from New York University in 1974 . While still a student, she created acclaimed autobiographical short films. With Valley Girl (1983) she brought out the young Nicolas Cage , with Was für ein Genie (1985) she won the Grand Prix of the Festival du Film de Paris. The Lust of the Beautiful Rose (1991) won the Independent Spirit Award , and Laura Dern achieved her breakthrough with an Oscar nomination .

Since the 2000s she has mainly worked for various television series and films.

As a longtime functionary, she managed to become the first female president of the Directors Guild of America from 2002 to 2003 .
