Life
As a child, Gene Reynolds played in various feature films from the 1930s , mostly in supporting roles as the tragic fate of a child. His better-known roles include a shy, walking disabled boy in The Devil's Guys (1938) alongside Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney, and the dying Jason Brown in the adventure film Land of the Wicked (1940) alongside Errol Flynn , Olivia de Havilland and Ronald Reagan . Reynolds took on a leading role in 1939 in the music film Music for Life , where he ran away from his difficult home and found a place in a music school. As an adult he had only mixed success as an actor, so he retired from the screen as a film actor in 1956 and as a television actor in 1967. He hadn't been in front of the camera since then.
Instead, Reynolds started a career with American television that gave him the opportunity to work as a producer, director and screenwriter on countless series, series episodes and television films. His most important work was the series M * A * S * H , which later gained cult status. There he was responsible for many episodes as a producer and director. For his work at M * A * S * H he received an Emmy Award as a producer in 1974 .
From 1993 to 1997 he was President of the Directors Guild of America , the association of American directors.
Gene Reynolds was married in 1979 and had a son. He died of heart failure in February 2020 at the age of 96.
