Deadly Storm (Original title: The Mortal Storm ) is an American feature film from 1940, which is based on the story of the same name by Phyllis Bottome from 1938.

action

The film is set in a German university town in 1933 , Munich . Professor Viktor Roth is celebrating his birthday. The celebration is interrupted by the news that Adolf Hitler has taken power in Germany. Roth is a Jew and knows what the seizure of power of the Nazis may mean for his family. However, his step-sons Erich and Otto von Rohn are enthusiastic about the political change. Fritz Marberg, the lover of Roth's daughter Freya, also joins her enthusiasm. Only Martin Breitner, who is in love with Freya, shares Viktor Roth's opinion.

The city is changing rapidly. The Nazis use violence and pressure on their opponents. Erich and Otto von Rohn leave Professor Roth's house. Freya breaks the connection to Fritz Marberg and finds Martin Breitner to be a partner for life. However, the young couple are quickly separated when Martin has to flee Germany after helping a friend to leave Germany. Professor Roth loses his teaching post and is sent to a concentration camp . He dies there. Freya and her mother flee to Austria , where Martin Breitner awaits them. But when Freya is being held at the border and is not allowed to leave the country, Martin comes back to Germany and wants to smuggle her over a mountain pass across the border to Austria. On the dangerous route they are tracked down by a group of Nazis shortly before the border. The group is led by Fritz Marberg. Both manage to escape across the border, where Freya is injured in an exchange of fire and dies a little later.

background

The film Deadly Storm was one of the first anti-fascist films from Hollywood . In Germany, Joseph Goebbels banned the showing of MGM films in principle. The film was shot from February to April 1940. The world premiere took place on June 14, 1940. The film was first shown in Germany in 1957.

Reviews

"Although the film undermines some distortion, its restrained portrayal can be guided by the effort not to lump all Germans together."
