action

Four young soldiers - Dakota Smith, Tex, California Jack Gilman and Jersey - have a 24-hour layover in New York before leaving for the war; they spend the waiting time in the Stage Door Canteen . A number of young women work as volunteers in the canteen ; In doing so, they have to submit to the strict rules of the leadership, which require that they act primarily as friendly dance partners for the soldiers waiting for their assignment; romantic relationships are strictly forbidden. However, one of the young women promptly falls in love with a soldier.

background

The film pays tribute to the Stage Door Canteen of the same name , which was created in New York City as a recreation center for American and Allied military personnel and maintained an entertainment program, in which mainly theater actors appeared, organized by the American Theater Wing . The original locations on 44th Street could not be used for the filming; therefore the location was recreated in New York and in the studios of RKO Radio Pictures in Culver City . The counterpart to the Stage Door Canteen on the east coast of the USA was the Hollywood Canteen on the west coast , which was celebrated in the movie Hollywood Canteen .

The song " We Mustn't Say Goodbye ", written by James V. Monaco and Al Dubin , received an Oscar nomination for Best Song in 1944 . Freddie Rich received another nomination for Best Score .
