- On January 8th, the Viennese police chief introduced the closure of cinemas from 10 p.m.
- February 5 : In San Francisco, the Western has The Outlaw ( Outlaw ) with Jane Russell in her first film role its premiere .
- May 17th : The feature film Ossessione ( Obsession ) by Italian director Luchino Visconti premieres. The film, with Clara Calamai and Massimo Girotti in the leading roles, is based on the crime novel When the Postman Rings Twice by James M. Cain and is often seen as the beginning of Italian neorealism . It only hits Italian cinemas briefly in June and is eventually banned by censors. The negative is destroyed, but Visconti manages to save a copy.

Academy Awards
This year's Academy Awards will take place on March 4th at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles . Due to the Second World War, the Oscar are only awarded as plastic replicas until the end of the war. After the war they were all exchanged for originals. This year the moderator is Bob Hope .
