- End of January: For the first time, the Association of Foreign Journalists in the United States announces the winners of the Golden Globe Award . The first winners are The Song of Bernadette by Henry King and Whom the Bell Tolls by Sam Wood .
- On April 24th, the premiere of Frau ohne Conscience will take place. This production, directed by Billy Wilder and based on a script by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler , is considered an outstanding example of film noir . The role model of the femme fatale was decisively shaped by this film by Barbara Stanwyck .
- On May 24th, the Reichsfilmkammer decreed that the films made in Vienna may no longer use dialect speech. This was a late reaction to the German critics, who particularly criticized Hans Moser's intelligibility. The wording of the instructions that Wien-Film passed on to its directors read: “Our superior authority advises me to take special care to ensure that the Viennese dialect or the dialect of the Danube and Alpine Reichsgaue are used in our films is voted so that our films remain understandable to the German audience of all tribes. "
- On September 1, the National Socialists issued a ban on all theaters. However, cinemas were allowed to continue operating.
- Due to the decree of September 1, and because many cinemas had already been destroyed by bombing, the Vienna Volksoper became the second largest cinema in the city for several months from October 6, with 1,550 seats.
