February 5 : Charlie Chaplin , Douglas Fairbanks Sr. , Mary Pickford and David Wark Griffith found United Artists in order to be able to produce films independently of the major studios.
December 27th : The fusion of Svenska Biografteatern and Filmindustri AB Scandia creates the film company AB Svensk Filmindustri (SF); its main owner is the industrialist Ivar Kreuger . As a result of the merger, SF has a share capital of 35,000 kroner and over 70 cinemas in Sweden. Charles Magnusson becomes the first director and the two internationally renowned directors Victor Sjöström and Mauritz Stiller belong to his staff.

The Vita-Film is of Anton and Luise Kolm as the successor company of the Viennese art film industry with a capital increase by the Deposit Bank re-established.

World premieres

May 13 : D. W. Griffith's silent film Broken Blossoms, starring Lillian Gish , premieres in New York , the first film to be marketed by United Artists .
June 15 : The Comedy Sunnyside ( on the sunny side ) of Charlie Chaplin is published.
September 18 : The Ufa-Palast am Zoo opens with the world premiere of Madame DuBarry by Ernst Lubitsch .
Oct. 23 : At Berlin Marmorhaus -Kino the equipment film is The Plague in Florence by Otto Rippert premiered. Fritz Lang wrote the screenplay, with Theodor Becker as the main actor .
