On May 17, 1946, the founding of DEFA is celebrated with a ceremony in Potsdam-Babelsberg . On October 15, 1946, Wolfgang Staudte (left) and Hildegard Knef present The Murderers Are Among Us, the first German post-war film.

• September 16 : Artur Brauner founds CCC-Film .
• October 15th : World premiere of Die Murderer sind unter uns (Direction: Wolfgang Staudte ) in East Berlin's Admiralspalast . This DEFA production is considered to be the first German post-war film. He was only seen in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1971.
• October 18 : The Walt Disney educational film The Story of Menstruation , produced on behalf of Kimberly-Clark , premieres in front of selected teaching staff.

• The film critic Nino Frank coined the term film noir in an article for the French film magazine L'écran français

Venice Film Festival

The Venice Film Festival took place for the first time since the Second World War from August 31 to September 15. However, no prizes have been awarded yet.

Cannes International Film Festival 1946

The Cannes Film Festival was to take place for the first time in 1939. However, due to the political situation in the run-up to the Second World War, it was not carried out. This year the first festival will take place from September 20th to October 5th. An international jury selected the following winners:

• International jury prize: La bataille du rail by René Clément
• Best Actor: Ray Milland for The Lost Weekend
• Best actress: Michèle Morgan for La Symphonie pastorale
• Best director: René Clément for La bataille du rail
