Arthur Max

Arthur Max (born May 1, 1946 in New York City , NY ) is an American production designer .

Life

After attending school, Max graduated from New York University , where he obtained a bachelor's degree in economics in 1969 . In August 1969, he was part of the technical crew that set up the lighting system at the Woodstock Festival . Max began working as a lighting technician at the Fillmore East Theater in New York in the fall of the same year , where he worked for two years until 1971. He was also largely responsible for some of the music videos of the time.

However, Max changed his subject and studied architecture in England and Italy , among other places . He completed this course in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in architecture at a polytechnic in London .

His film career began in the mid-1980s as assistant art director, for example in 1984 on the adventure film Greystoke - The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes , which was also his debut film. In 1995 Max was discovered by David Fincher , who hired him as a production designer for his thriller Seven .

Since then, Max has supervised films by Fincher or Ridley Scott without exception , including Scott's two best-known films, Gladiator (2000) and Kingdom of Heaven (2005). Max has been nominated three times for the Oscar in the category Best Production Design, but has so far received nothing.
