Greystoke - The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes is a British movie of the genre adventure / drama from the year 1984 by director Hugh Hudson . Robert Towne and Michael Austin wrote the screenplay based on the popular Tarzan stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs . The main roles are Ralph Richardson , Ian Holm and the young Christopher Lambert in the title role. Andie MacDowell makes her screen debut in the role of Jane Porter.

action

After a brief introduction to the departure of a Victorian couple from England and the shipwreck, it is shown how the infant is stolen by a mother monkey shortly after the death of its mother. The father of the child is also killed by the monkeys. The first third of the film is wordless and shows the social life of a horde of apes in which the adolescent lives and with which he has to face the dangers of the jungle with predators and hunters.

As a young adult he rescues the Belgian explorer Phillippe D'Arnot, who was wounded by arrows. His British expedition had been attacked by natives, and he was the only one to escape seriously injured. D'Arnot finds a family Bible in the ruined tree house of Tarzan's parents and becomes aware of its origins. He teaches him human language, tells Tarzan about his ancestry and brings him to his grandfather in England.

The character of Jane only appears in the second part of the film, when they return to the Greystokes family estate. Although everyone tries, the young man never feels comfortable with the rules of the English society of the time, which he imitates rather than internalized. On the contrary, the prevailing decadence is unbearable for him: He even comes into conflict with society again and again. When he and the beautiful Jane fall in love, it almost seems as if he is accepting his new life.

When his grandfather dies and he is supposed to take on his social role, he is given the task of inaugurating a new museum. However, he cannot stand the sight of the many stuffed animals there, walks alone into non-public areas and discovers some live monkeys in the preparation room, among which is his monkey father. He falls back into his former mentality, frees him and tries to save him. When the monkey is targeted and shot, he decides to return to the jungle. Accompanied by D'Arnot and Jane, he cannot resist the sight of the African wilderness and runs into it. The two watch as he tears his clothes off and disappears into the distance.

background

The film describes the fate of the young Scottish nobleman John Clayton, who was raised by monkeys in the African jungle and brought to British " civilization " as a grown man in order to take up his inheritance . However, he fails because of the lack of understanding that society has shown towards him, the supposed savage, because of the difficulties in adapting to civilized customs and because of his inability to accept the atrocities that are inflicted on his animal “ relatives ” in zoos and museums . So he returns to the jungle , whom the tenderly burgeoning love for the young Jane Porter and the friendship with his “discoverer” and mentor Phillippe D'Arnot cannot hold back.

While the material has already been shown on screen in numerous films, Greystoke presents the old story in a much darker and more dramatic guise than its predecessors. When the film was released in the cinemas , it was advertised with the line “Tarzan as he really was”.

The producers decided to have Andie MacDowell dubbed Glenn Close because her southern accent did not match the British aristocrat she portrayed.

Locations

Floors Castle in Kelso , the estate of the Dukes of Roxburghe, served as the family seat of the Scottish Earls of Greystoke . Hatfield House in Hatfield was also used for the interior shots . The jungle scenes were shot in the Republic of Cameroon , including at the Ekom waterfalls in Korup National Park .

criticism

"A ravishingly photographed and staged modification of the cinema myth without the playful, euphemistic effects of its predecessors, realistically involved in both the jungle scenes and the representation of British aristocratic society."

“It is the tiredness of civilization, the anger at the hybrid human interaction with nature that are evoked in the film in atmospherically haunting scenes. Tarzan, this is a being who takes nature back to itself, takes it back as a creature: return of a prodigal son. The film does not value the muscular and jack-of-all-trades Tarzan - he hardly appears.
